Hawallywood is another epic collaboration between hip hop artists Capo Corleone and B. Gullie, a powerful pair with a lot to say. The new EP follows the success of their last two singles, “Paid” and “Don’t Play,” and also contains both tracks. The title of the record references both men’s time in the San Francisco group The Hawals and Capo Corleone’s decision to move the group’s operations to Hollywood. As such, it pays respect to their shared past and to their new home base. The record is a focused, articulate, and well-produced blast of West Coast rap that lights up speakers just as you’d expect it to and shows Capo Corleone and B. Gullie as ever-evolving creative partners.
“Don’t Play” opens the set with a heavy trap-ish beat that sets a menacing vibe. The cut is a bare-knuckle banger that lets both artists stand tall right from the jump. Capo and B. are slick, capable lyricists who have sharpened their language to a point. They never show us weak bars or a dummy line and command the listener's attention.
“Changes” is full of simmering intensity and features a nimble bass line in addition to Capo and B. spitting street lightning. “Paid” is strong and motivating, capturing both men at their peak on the microphone. It’s funky, captivating, and needs to be heard. Other vital moments here include “Lighthouse” and “Howl.” Hawallywood is a triumphant record from front to back and definitely packs the gear to launch Capo Corleone and B. Gullie into the stratosphere. The whole world is going to jam to this one.
