THE PROF. FUZZ 63 “OWLS” ALBUM REVIEW - WARPED SURF/GARAGE ROCK!

THE PROF. FUZZ 63

Owls

(Sister Raygun Records)

Dallas’ own avant-garage/surf rock juggernaut The Prof. Fuzz 63 taps into everything that makes rock and roll cool, dirty, and worth living for on its brand new album Owls. Released June 15th, 2020 via Sister Raygun Records, the record is a journey through an entirely new dimension of glorious lo-fi garage rock filled to the brim with fuzz tones and reverb. The band brings us face-to-face with a dope-dealing soccer mom who used to be a punk, an unlikeable owl, and other insane characters over the course of the set, all held up by pounding drums, gritty guitars, and grinding organs. The group also filters covers by Tom Waits and Flipper through its mechanism with equally positive results.

Together since 2014, The Prof.Fuzz 63 are songwriter/vocalist/guitar-owner Professor Fuzz, organist/vocalist Sleepy Redhead, and their love-child drummer Mr. B. They’ve forged a solid reputation by playing more than 200 shows throughout Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, touring Middle America, and putting out three full-length albums and an EP on Dreamy Life Records. The band inhabits a unique and peculiar musical world that’s dissonant, warped, and an incredible amount of fun for like-minded young moderns. Tracks like the opener, “Owls,” rock hard and weird and could draw comparisons to Wall of Voodoo, The Cramps, and The Ramones.

“Sheena Is A Soccer Mom” follows the story arc of The Ramones’ legendary Sheena through punk, a goth phase, and marrying a tax attorney from the suburbs. Now, she drives a minivan and deals Adderall to the other moms in the neighborhood. She’s normal and boring now but at least we know where she ended up. This kind of high-concept surf punk seems to be the band’s stock in trade and will appeal to all those who like it rough, real, and all freaked-out. All eight songs here are well worth your time but be sure to listen all the way to the end to catch The Prof. Fuzz 63’s raging cover of Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West.” Owls is a killer dispatch from the true American underground and rock fans everywhere will absolutely want to get loud with it.
