THE NEW STARTS NOW "LOVE AND SECRETS" SINGLE REVIEW - POP/ROCK!

THE NEW STARTS NOW

“Love and Secrets”

Single review by Mike O’Cull, independent music journalist. www.mikeocull.com

Chicago-based pop/rock outfit The New Starts Now displays a timeless, hook-filled style on its single “Love and Secrets.” Led by singer/songwriter Jon (just Jon), the group refuses to play the identity game and keeps the full names and details of the musicians involved to itself, making fans and media stay focused on the songs it creates. The band has a strong 90s influence and a general affection for the music of the MTV generation, a combination that results in songs with soundtrack-strength hooks that are flooded with hit-single DNA.

“Love and Secrets” is an alarmingly catchy bit of acoustic guitar and vocal-centered pop/rock that lives somewhere between Oasis and Buddy Holly. The feel is organic, welcoming, and warm and the track is an excellent place to enter The New Starts Now’s universe for the uninitiated. The song is a call to a new love to share their secrets and move closer and a promise to return the favor in kind that’s emotive and genuine. The mood is upbeat, hopeful, and honest and will reel in pop listeners in an instant. Acoustic strumming defines the pocket, which gets ornamented with piano and violin, and the vocals soar above it all just as they should. The accompanying music video is well-shot and effective, enhancing the vibe of the song by following a happy couple around on a fun afternoon.

Clearly, Jon and whoever he’s working with have their acts together. “Love and Secrets” hits the pop/rock target dead on and the track will make you more than a little curious as to what else this crew is up to. The New Starts Now is all about songsmithing on a professionally-high level and has a lot to offer anyone looking for their new favorite song. Highly recommended.
