Straight out of San Clemente, California, Home is West displays a big talent for writing amazing indie/alt/Americana songs on the band’s new EP Here and Now. Although it’s only four tracks in length, the EP is a full-on clinic in the “three chords and the truth” method of rock and roll and each cut is melodic, meaningful, and jam packed with the power of simplicity. The sound is indie heartland guitar pop with a Beach Boy vocal influence that makes every song here complete ear candy. The group began tracking Here and Now back in March but, like so many others, had to put the sessions on hold because of COVID-19. Thankfully, they were able to reconvene in July and finish this brief-but-impressive release.

Although the band is highly melodic, Home is West creates music of substance, not fluff. The opening cut, “Mexico,” deals with a personal journey towards inner peace, the kind we all undertake eventually. “Sooner or Later” is a song about the reality of karma that rocks a brilliant, straight-up rock groove and “Eight Seconds” was written after literally overhearing eight seconds of a stranger’s conversation. The group excels at finding the melancholy and bittersweet qualities that underlie their songs and it allows them to connect directly with the emotions of their fans. Home is West is a great rock band in the classic sense and will undoubtedly fly high on the strength of these new tracks. Don’t miss a second of this one.
