ROBOT RAVEN “SET TO SOAR” REVIEW - TOP SHELF SONGWRITERS!

ROBOT RAVEN
Set to Soar

Review by Mike O’Cull, independent music journalist. www.mikeocull.com

Robot Raven is the name of a studio band/recording entity made up of only two talented performers, John Rigg and Edmond Bruneau. Rigg is the man in charge of all the music and Bruneau writes the lyrics. Together, they write songs rooted in just about every 20th Century pop/rock style possible and show a great deal of mastery over these vintage sounds. Robot Raven’s latest effort, Set to Soar, takes our heroes further down this path. Styles appearing include rockabilly, gospel, and wah-laced 60s rock. The songs are hooky and memorable, no matter the vibe, and fans of tight, entertaining songwriters will find this right on target.

There are a lot of high points on Set to Soar. Rigg and Bruneau drop cool tunes everywhere they go. The minor key rockabilly jam “A Girl Like You” opens the album in fine style with an uptempo groove and tasty surf-tinged guitar work. “The Little Things” is vibe-filled Seattle-influenced guitar pop while “Ready Now” shows itself to be a love song put over a gospel feel. The styles keep shifting but the creative feel glues everything together and makes this set a good full-length listen. Robot Raven has written over sixty songs as a unit and its blend of song chops, classic DNA, and unique arrangements make checking out the back catalog seem like a tremendous idea. Their fourth album, Set to Soar, however, is a great place to start.
