New York hip hop artist Payphoneworld has a new six-song EP, No Reception, that shows the young rapper expanding his sound and shifting his style. Much of the record takes a chilled-out sonic approach that suits Payphoneworld’s laid-back rhymes very well and borders on the experimental. Tracks like the opener “She Don’t Like Me” and “Rising To The Top” take listeners into a mellow, ethereal space that’s hypnotic and intoxicating. Payphoneworld doesn’t cram his bars full of syllables but injects them with a spatial quality that makes every word matter.
“123 Bop” hits harder than most of the other tracks, using a big, gritty synth bass tone that pushes Payphoneworld to grind his lyrics out with more intensity. He also pulls in more special guest artists than on previous efforts, including XXJay, The Kid Daub, and Yungmack, whose performances add some extra seasoning to Payphoneworld’s already-strong sauce.
