OLIVIA ROYAL & PSYCHE ‘PSYCHE’ MIXTAPE REVIEW: POP/R&B STAR ON THE RISE!

OLIVIA ROYAL & PSYCHE

PSYCHE

By Mike O’Cull www.mikeocull.com

Chicago pop singer, songwriter, and producer Olivia Royal shows herself to the world three different ways on her newest release PSYCHE. Psyche is both the name of the record and of the “group” she formed to record it. Psyche the group is made up of three characters that are manifestations of separate parts of Royal’s personality. Cassie is her head, Isabela is her heart, and Yummy is her gut. Together, they add up to one incredibly talented person but each persona has her own job to do. Royal began germinating this project three years ago but it truly blossomed during the pandemic lockdown. It’s really a unique way of expressing herself and Royal deserves a listen based on her concept, alone.

Royal brings out each character in a musical setting that walks the line between pop and modern R&B. Her sound is smooth and well thought out and each character speaks her piece thoughtfully and intelligently. Royal’s voice is a thing of beauty and her lyrics elevate her to another level, entirely. Standout tracks include “Glorious,” “Time,” and “El Dorado.” In a genre often criticized for being shallow, Olivia Royal takes us on a deep dive into her world and welcomes us all inside. Highly recommended.
