Virginia-based duo LightBody Sound is an original synthwave/folktronica/dream pop outfit made up of married couple Elizabeth and Chris Knudson. The pair have a new record, the self-titled LightBody Sound, that shows them to be a potent and talented combination with their gaze fixed on artistry and originality. Their style definitely leans to the left of the dial and the Knudsons appear to create fearlessly, eagerly shifting gears and stacking influences into something that belongs solely to them. It’s the sort of music that can awaken and heal your soul. LightBody Sound is built around the ideas of synth pop, male and female lead vocals, new age thought, and plant medicine. The two artists have much creative power together and make hypnotic, unforgettable music.
From the opening instrumental, “Unity Song,” and on forward, it’s impossible to guess what’s around each new bar line. Elizabeth and Chris trade off vocals, easily shift from one danceable feel to another, use spoken words, and share their messages with the authenticity of true believers. Tracks like “Ascension Zone,” “Dream of Love,” and “Americronica” are deep and compelling to the point that simply calling them “synth pop” does them a disservice. The songs rise above the sum of their parts and lead listeners down roads they’ve never experienced before. Fans equally in love with ideas, lyrics, and music will be drawn inside them and won’t want to leave. LightBody Sound is making the kind of intelligent, spiritual art our world needs, now and always. Don’t sleep on this record.
