JON RHOTEN’S ‘RHOTEN’ RECORD REVIEW - BRIT ROCK VISIONARY!

JON RHOTEN

Rhoten

By Mike O’Cull www.mikeocull.com

Rock artist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and visionary Jon Rhoten displays an advanced command of his chosen idiom on his latest four-song album Rhoten. Rhoten wrote, produced, tracked, mixed, and mastered the record on his own at his private Rhoten Studio and ended up with a brief but significant masterpiece that veers from Brit Rock to psychedelia to alternative and back again. Rhoten’s music is intelligent, accessible, and well-executed, relying on unyielding melodies and literate lyrics to carve out its place in the world. The sound is heavy on classic influences but Rhoten’s writing chops are sharp, focused, and original.

The lead-off track, “Undone,” is a superb mid-tempo song about time and its impact on our lives. Rhoten’s piano is the heart of the track, setting an easy, introspective mood for his soaring lead vocals. He uses beautiful notes and melodies to communicate difficult things as all songwriting masters do and it’s thrilling to witness. “Sing My Song” is a cool alt-rock song with a strummy guitar feel and lyrics that deal with the fear of making mistakes. It’s an immediate ear worm with a sweet groove and a hit-single chorus tailor-made for radio greatness. Rhoten’s talent is subtle but immense and his tuneful, emotive songs have the potential to touch millions of people. Be sure to check out the rocking “Pathetic” and Rhoten’s six-minute closer “The Space That Binds” for further proof of star power. Buy this record and support this artist. The world needs more music like this.
