Rising soul/R&B vocalist Jason Biyo makes strong statements of talent and intention on his debut EP N.U.M.B. (Never Underestimate Mr. Biyo), which is now available on all major streaming platforms. Biyo produced all seven tracks here himself and does an excellent job of building his own personal style on top of a base of strong contemporary R&B. He has a smooth vocal tone that fits his material very well but never oversings or pushes these songs too hard.

Biyo opens the E.P. with “No Ghosts (Down),” an understated vocal showcase about being ready for a stable relationship with one particular someone. Biyo immediately takes flight here, hitting the track with genuine emotion and style. “Hey Gorgeous” is a funky late-night sort of cut built around a fat, phased-out electric piano and features a guest appearance from female vocalist Emmillienne. It’s rhythmic, sensual, and evokes the fiery chemistry of mutual attraction. The title song, “Numb,” is also a winner and aims a spotlight on Biyo’s vocal chops and dynamic range. Be sure to also spin “Fall For You” and “Hands.” Jason Biyo is a large talent and fans of sweet modern soul should get used to hearing his name. He is absolutely ready for a big breakout year.
