HYBRYDD "HYBRYDD" REVIEW - SMART POP/ROCK!

HYBRYDD

Hybrydd

Review by Mike O’Cull, independent music journalist. www.mikeocull.com

Hybrydd is a three-member pop/rock consortium working out of Toronto, ON, Canada. The group has a far-from-typical sound built on strong acoustic guitars, compelling, propulsive drumming, and ethereal male vocals that hint at a Moody Blues influence. The recent self-titled release Hybrydd finds the band in top form for both songwriting and playing. The music has an identifiable thread running through it all but never starts to sound repetitive or lose any skill in execution. The lineup of vocalist Aukai, bassist/guitarist Be’, and drummer/percussionist Marcell is a potent combination and easily creates a lot of polished, focused sound.

The songs on Hybrydd are clearly the group’s main concern and all other elements are kept in service to each track’s bigger picture. Grooves, melodies, lyrics, and guitars are balanced perfectly to allow the songs to stand out. Points of interest for an initial listening party might be “Foreign Land,” “Galileo's Planet,” “Mockingbird,” and “Nassau” but the record is strong all the way through. Hybrydd seems to be the kind of band that appeals to the more discerning segments of the rock audience, the people looking for intelligent music to make them think as well as dance. Hybrydd accomplishes those goals well and will be a happy addition to some of the world’s finest record collections.
