HIM & HER "HIM & HER DO TEXAS WOMEN" REVIEW - TEXAS SONGWRITERS!!

HIM & HER

Him & Her Do Texas Women

Review by Mike O’Cull, independent music journalist. www.mikeocull.com

Him & Her is a Texas-based acoustic duo that blends country, folk, blues, and jazz influences with high-level original songwriting. Comprised of Brenda Freed on vocals, acoustic guitar, and keyboard and Michael D’Eath (“DEE-uth”) on diatonic and chromatic harmonicas, Him & Her has an instantly attractive Americana sound that builds on the familiar but maintains a strong individuality. Him & Her Do Texas Women is the pair’s third album and features 12 new songs: one co-write by Freed and 11 by other female songwriters from the Lone Star State. The set is an understated gem full of great songs and beautiful playing that all fans of American music will enjoy.

This is a really great record that is all about wrapping beautiful arrangements around excellent songs. Freed is smooth and expressive on both vocals and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and D’Eath’s harmonica skills recall greats like Greg “Fingers” Taylor and Mickey Raphael. Upright bassist Duke Davis co-produced with Freed and adds much to the proceedings, as do special guests like Curtis Clogston on dobro and the great Lloyd Maines on pedal steel, mandolin, and guitar. Tracks like “Full Moon in Austin,” “From Where I Stand,” and “The News” are sonically beautiful, lyrically compelling, and serve as wonderful reminders of just how satisfying acoustic music can be in such competent hands.

Him & Her Do Texas Women is a well-conceived and artistically rendered album that deserves to be heard by a wider audience. Freed and D’Eath have the kind of natural chemistry that can’t be faked and they spread it around to all the players supporting them. If you like songwriters, you need this record.
